How to Choose the Right LED Strip

With so many options available, selecting the right LED strip can feel overwhelming. Strip type, color temperature, brightness, waterproofing, voltage, and mounting all need to be considered. This guide walks you through the process step by step so you can confidently specify the right product for your project.

Step 1: Determine the Application

Start by identifying how the light will be used. LED strips generally fall into three categories of application.

Accent lighting adds visual interest and ambiance. Think cove lighting, shelf highlights, display case illumination, and architectural details. Accent lighting is typically lower wattage because the goal is mood, not task visibility.

Task lighting provides focused illumination for work areas. Under cabinet kitchen lighting, workshop benches, and vanity mirrors are common examples. Task lighting needs higher brightness and accurate color rendering.

General lighting serves as the primary light source for a room or area. This requires the highest lumen output per meter and careful planning to ensure even coverage across the space.

Step 2: Choose COB or SMD

If the LED strip will be visible to the viewer, choose COB strips. They produce a smooth, dot free line of light that looks clean without needing a diffuser. If the strip will be hidden inside an aluminum channel, behind a diffuser, or recessed out of direct view, SMD strips are a cost effective and proven option.

Step 3: Select Color Temperature or RGB/RGBW

For white lighting, choose a Kelvin value based on the desired mood. 2700K is warm and cozy, 3000K is neutral warm (the most popular residential choice), 4000K is balanced neutral, and 6000K is bright daylight. If you need the ability to change color temperature, choose a CCT strip.

For color changing applications, RGB strips produce a full spectrum of colors. RGBW strips add a dedicated white channel for better white light quality compared to mixing RGB to simulate white. Both require a compatible controller.

Step 4: Pick the Right IP Rating

Match the IP rating to your installation environment. Use IP20 for indoor dry locations. Use IP67 for outdoor areas, bathrooms, kitchens, or anywhere exposed to moisture. Use IP68 for underwater applications like pools and fountains. Choosing the right rating protects your investment without overspending on unnecessary waterproofing.

Step 5: Calculate Power Needs

Every LED strip has a wattage per meter rating. To find the total power requirement, multiply the watts per meter by the total length of strip you plan to install. Then add a 20% safety margin to ensure your power supply is not running at full capacity.

Example: A 10 meter run of strip rated at 14.4 watts per meter requires 144 watts. Adding the 20% margin brings the target to 172.8 watts, so you would select a power supply rated at 180 watts or higher.

Step 6: Choose Voltage (12V vs 24V)

LED strips are available in 12V and 24V configurations. For shorter runs under 5 meters, 12V strips work well. For longer runs, 24V is the better choice because it experiences less voltage drop over distance, which means more consistent brightness from start to finish.

24V strips also draw less current for the same wattage, which allows you to use thinner wiring and smaller connectors. For most professional installations, 24V is the recommended standard.

Step 7: Select Mounting Method

Most LED strips come with adhesive backing (3M VHB tape) for direct surface mounting. This works well on clean, smooth surfaces. For a more professional finish, consider mounting inside an aluminum profile (also called an aluminum channel or extrusión). Profiles provide better heat dissipation, physical protection, and a polished appearance.

Aluminum profiles are available in surface mount, recessed, and corner configurations. Pair them with a frosted or opal diffuser cover to eliminate any visible LED dots and create a smooth, even light output.

Bottom line: Work through these seven steps in order, and you will narrow down the exact strip, power supply, and mounting configuration for your project. If you need help with any step, our team is available to walk you through the selection process.
